What Happens in a Breathwork Class?
If you have been curious about trying a breathwork class but are not quite sure what to expect, you are not alone.
A lot of people hear about breathwork and feel drawn to it, but still wonder:
What actually happens in class? What do I do? Is it intense? What if I have never done anything like this before?
The good news is this: you do not need experience to begin.
A beginner-friendly breathwork class is designed to guide you step by step.
You do not need to know special techniques ahead of time.
You do not need to show up perfectly calm.
You simply come as you are.

A breathwork class is a guided experience
At its core, a breathwork class is a guided experience where you are invited to work with your breath in an intentional way.
The facilitator leads the class and helps create a safe, supportive environment for you to notice your breath, connect with your body, and explore what the practice brings up.
Depending on the class, breathwork may feel gentle and calming, more energizing, or more emotionally opening.
But no matter the style, the intention is usually the same:
to help you reconnect with yourself through the breath.
Breathwork classes are not about performing or doing anything perfectly. They are about creating space to breathe, feel, and listen.
What happens when you first arrive?
When you arrive to a breathwork class, you will usually be welcomed into the space and given a moment to settle in.
Most classes begin with a grounding process so you can transition out of the pace of the outside world and into the experience.
This may include a short introduction, a few words from the facilitator, gentle body awareness, an intention for the class, or an explanation of the breath pattern you will be using.
This beginning matters because many people walk into class carrying stress, rushing energy, mental noise, or emotional weight from the day.
The first few moments help you land.

Then you begin working with the breath
Once the class begins, the facilitator will guide you into a specific style of breathing.
This might be a slow and calming pattern, a more rhythmic and activating pattern, or a breath practice designed to help you connect with sensation, emotion, or presence.
In many classes, you will be lying down or sitting comfortably.
The facilitator may guide you with their voice throughout the experience and sometimes music is used to support the process.
The breath becomes the main focus.
Instead of staying caught in your thoughts, you are invited to keep returning to the breath.
That is part of what makes breathwork so powerful.. it helps bring you out of the noise of the mind and back into the body.
During a breathwork class, you may be invited to:
- Get comfortable and settle into the space
- Listen to the facilitator’s guidance
- Follow a specific breathing pattern
- Notice what is happening in your body
- Allow emotion, sensation, or awareness to arise without judgment
- Rest and integrate afterward
What might you feel during breathwork?
Every person’s breathwork experience is different.
Some people feel calm and grounded.
Some feel energized.
Some feel emotional.
Some notice tingling, warmth, lightness, heaviness, movement in the body, or a sense of emotional release.
Some feel like they are finally taking a full breath for the first time in a long time.
There is no single “right” response.
And you do not need to force anything to happen.
Sometimes breathwork feels powerful.
Sometimes it feels subtle.
Sometimes the biggest shift is simply becoming more aware of what you have been carrying.
A breathwork class does not require you to have a dramatic experience. It simply invites you into a more conscious relationship with your breath and yourself.

What happens after the breathing portion?
After the active breathing part of class, there is usually a period of rest and integration.
This is when you are given space to simply be with what came up.
To notice how you feel.
To let your body settle.
To give yourself time to absorb the experience.
Some classes may close with stillness, gentle music, guided reflection, journaling, or optional sharing.
This part of class matters because breathwork is not only about the breathing itself.
It is also about making space for what follows.
Sometimes the real insight comes afterward.
Sometimes the body softens more deeply after the breathing ends.
Sometimes you notice clarity, emotion, spaciousness, or a surprising sense of peace.
Is a breathwork class intense?
It can be, depending on the style of breathwork and what your body is ready for, but not every class feels intense.
Some breathwork classes are deeply calming and grounding.
Others are more activating and emotionally opening.
That is why guidance matters.
In a supportive class, the facilitator helps create safety and offers direction so you are not navigating the experience alone.
And as a participant, you are always allowed to listen to your body.
You are allowed to slow down.
You are allowed to rest.
You are allowed to meet the practice where you are.
Breathwork is not about pushing past your limits.
It is about building awareness and capacity over time.
What if it is your first time?
If it is your first breathwork class, know this:
you do not need to have it all figured out before you come.
You do not need to know what you are doing.
You do not need to be good at breathing.
You do not need to already understand what you need from the practice.
It is okay to be new.
It is okay to feel curious.
It is okay to be a little nervous.
That is exactly why beginner-friendly classes exist.
The invitation is simply to show up, be open, and let the experience meet you where you are.
A breathwork class may be especially supportive if you are:
- Feeling stressed or overwhelmed
- Wanting more nervous system support
- Curious about emotional release
- Looking for a practice that helps you reconnect with your body
- Wanting a guided experience instead of figuring it out alone
